"softballing"?

I heard the word "softballing" several times on today's Brian Lehrer show covered the confirmation hearing of Judge Samuel Alito.

"They are softballing" or "He softballs"... something like that.

I went to my dictionary.

softball = 1. a game similar to baseball that is played on a smaller field with a special ball

2. a ball that is slightly larger and less hard than a baseball, used to play this game

It seems different. Then, I googled the word "softballing".

The followings are came out:
"Why is the press softballing Bush about Iraq?"
"softballing question for him"
"hold the president more accountable for his actions instead of softballing him all the time"

umm... I think I'm close to the meaning now.
"softball" vs. "hardball"
related to "interviewing" or "questioning", with media or press in most of times?

Being kind to somebody
Give easy questions to somebody in an interview
Having a cozy relationship

something like that?
Anyway, it's an interesting expression!!

Oh it's time to bed!! Good night.
